Biography

The person behind the mission

James A. Lovell Jr. was a U.S. Navy test pilot who flew four spaceflights, more than any other astronaut of his era without a lunar landing. He flew alongside Frank Borman on Gemini 7's 14-day endurance flight in 1965, then commanded Gemini 12 in 1966, the final Gemini mission. Lovell was Command Module Pilot on Apollo 8, becoming one of the first three humans to orbit the Moon. He commanded Apollo 13 in 1970, and when an oxygen tank explosion crippled the spacecraft en route to the Moon, he helped lead the crew through a dramatic, ultimately successful fight to bring them safely home.
